Complaints Car from Murray Motors is a total lemon (Denver)
Complaints#
I am very saddened that I bought a lemon at Murray Motors.
I thought reputation preceded quality and trust, I was mistaken. I bought a Land Rover with 2 dangerous defect issues from Murray Motors and I am stuck with $21,000 spent – only to learn that my car additionally needs a new engine on top of the lost $8,000 in repairs.

It needed the new engine on the day I bought the car at their dealership. The engine problem has been a known & documented defect since 3-14-1003. They are a dealership full of pride….. but I have not seen any satisfactory follow through and I am a deeply disappointed customer. I am still waiting for some proof of their integrity.

Owner of a 2003 Land Rover
TO : Land Rover North America att: Linda D’Ambrosio (800-637-6837, then #9, then #1 ext 2876)
I bought my used 2003 Land Rover Discovery 2 SE from Murray Motors in Denver CO on August 19, 2008.
The burning smell began on 1/23/09, which was 4 months (only 4,000 miles) after purchasing my car. It was 4 quarts low and neither shop I took it to (on a number of different occasions) for thousands of dollars – could fix the problem. It uses oil today at a rate that is unnatural, so I have to keep putting more and more oil in or the engine will burn up like so many others have.
I have learned after spending $21,000 on this car, that it is a well known Land Rover defect that LR has been aware of since 2003. It has been affecting MANY Land Rovers in my vin group for years now, and LR is doing nothing about it – unless lawyers are retained. I have spoken with Michael Wing (251-433-7468) who received $10,000 from LRNA for this client with the same issue. He is not in Colorado so I am seeking a Colorado lawyer to get this money back for me. Anyone available??
I formation about this defect is spewed all over the internet by angry LR owners in my same position. Stated repeatedly : The only cure is a NEW ENGINE. Over $10,000 and another week in a rental car.
This is a very serious & dangerous defect and many people have burned up their engines. I dont feel comfortable driving it very far anymore OR selling it to anyone else, knowing about this defect and the dangerous possibilities.
I have sent 2 letters to confirm the early mileage detection of engine oil consumption on my 2003 LR Discovery. It was the UN-authorized LR repair shop that found the defect alert for me online.
Neither Murray Motors nor LRNA want to take responsibility for this situation. Neither are budging. Both are clearly responsible and I am sick of talking to them patiently.
I want to buy a safe car now – somewhere else & I want my money back immediately.

Your first mistake was buying a Land Rover. Your second was not having said Rover checked by a mechanic of your choosing which Murray Motors would have almost certainly agreed to. Having been in the car business for some years of my life, this old adage means more than saying let me see the car fax……..BUYER BEWARE. I’m assuming by your post that you did not purchase a warranty. If that IS the case, than you almost certainly have a piece of paper with the words AS IS across the top with your signature on the back of it. Preexisting flaws with the vehicle or not, it was your responsibility to have the vehicle checked out; not the salesmans or the lot kids’. They owe you nothing if what I think is true.
You’re an owner.
Sorry.
This ‘Anon” is Mark Murray, the owner of these stores. He was enjoyable to speak to on the phone, until he finally came out with the same punchline as his store managers, but even worse. He suggested that they would offer me about $5,000 in trade for one of his other “as is” (damaged most likely) used cars IF AND ONLY IF my 2003 LR with 86,000 miles on it did NOT have a scratch or blemish on it. What a ridiculous suggestion!
When I reminded him again that I had $21,000 invested in this Land Rover because of the defective engine that can’t be fixed – that I bought off his showroom floor- he suggested that he would (and I am seriously quoting him) raise the price on the car I might want to trade – $10,000 MORE – so that it would ‘look’ as if they were taking good care of me! This was when I thanked him for his time and told him straight out, “I need to hang up now, you are clearly not meeting me in the middle or respecting me at all.”
Mark Murray’s words in the above post (in large letters) are the only thing he said of any merit here. BUYER BEWARE!!! Yes, I bought a lemon at Murray Motors and they are offering very little compensation while denying all responsibility for what they sold me. Mark Murray received a fax from me yesterday of the actual defect bulletin from Land Rover that has applied since 3-14-2003 on my very vehicle. Still, nothing but this ignorant response and a totally lousy offer.
Mr Murray (in the above response) calls his employees “kids.” No further comment.
This is a dealership that prides itself on customer satisfaction, but is run by old ‘kids’ that have screwed me financially with this lemon of a car. It’s time for a new customer slogan at Murray Motors: BUYER BEWARE!!!
I have decided to accept their offer of a check for $2,000 toward my repairs and be done with it. Please remove all postings immediately once they have received this response. This will complete our business together. Thank-you, PG Roche
